The term "firewall" is used to refer to the program configured to allow or reject various data packets passing between two computer networks. It acts as a kind of traffic controller for data flow between the Internet and a local network. The main purpose of a firewall is to prevent attacks on the local network and, by extension, ensure security. It provides immediate security by being configured to reject all connections except those allowed by the network administrator. Κύριος σκοπός ενός firewall είναι η πρόληψη επιθέσεων στον τοπικό δίσκο και κατ’ επέκταση η ασφάλεια και αντιμετώπιση τους. Παρέχει άμεση ασφάλεια διότι ρυθμίζεται με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε να απορρίπτει όλες τις συνδέσεις εκτός από εκείνες που επιτρέπει ο διαχειριστής του δικτύου.
